Firefighters Allege Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Against Ex-Cop

Toms River, NJ - Three current and former firefighters have filed a lawsuit claiming they were sexually abused by an ex-cop and department superior.

A bombshell 95-page lawsuit filed on March 17, 2025, has rocked a local fire district, accusing Robert Sinnott, a former police officer and assistant fire chief, of heinous acts against fellow firefighters. The complaint paints a chilling picture of abuse, alleging that Sinnott exploited his authority to prey on young men under his command.

According to the suit, Sinnott held administrative roles and “other positions of authority” within the fire district, giving him direct oversight of the firefighters who have now come forward. The plaintiffs claim he leveraged his power—and deep connections within the department—to intimidate, groom, and abuse victims, all under the guise of “training” or “mentorship”.

The lawsuit accuses Sinnott of subjecting the men to sexual assault, harassment, and manipulation, including handcuffing, groping, and other acts that allegedly escalated into violent and sexually explicit “demonstrations.”

Worse still, the suit alleges a culture of silence and retaliation. When the firefighters attempted to report the abuse, they claim their complaints were covered-up or dismissed.

The plaintiffs—whose identities remain confidential—are seeking compensatory and punitive damages for what they call years of “emotional trauma,” “professional setbacks,” and “psychological distress” caused by Sinnott’s alleged actions.
