According to officials, a lifeguard in Asbury Park, NJ was impaled by a beach umbrella early Wednesday. The umbrella went through her shoulder, exiting out of her back.

Other lifeguards administered first aid until the fire department and EMS arrived at the scene. The stake of the umbrella was about six feet long and couldn’t be removed, so officials cut it down and didn’t remove it to prevent her from bleeding out.

Asbury Park Fire Department Chief Kevin Keddy told reporters “she’s a tough young woman”. She was conscious and alert throughout the incident.
